Milfoil, and how the SPCA fights back

Milfoil (Myriophyllum) is an invasive waterborne plant that is spreading rampant among the coves of Sebago Lake. The plant grows rapidly and is a hinderance to both the lake’s native wildlife and to local homeowners. Milfoil both blocks the sunlight many water-dwelling plants and animals rely on, and impedes the enjoyment of activities such as swimming and fishing, driving down waterfront property values and the ability of residents to enjoy lake-based recreation.

The SPCA fights back through funding manual milfoil removal efforts and by providing educational resources in which people can inform themselves on the threat and how to prevent the spread of milfoil. Because of how rapidly the plant spreads, how easily it takes root when transported from one area of the lake to another, and the tedious and expensive process of milfoil removal, the fight is not an easy one - but it is one that can be won through awareness, education, and the generous support of our Sebago Lake community.
