“To stop the invasion of Milfoil in Sebago Cove through

direct removal, preventative measures, and educational efforts.”

SCPA Mission Statement

Milfoil, and how the SCPA fights back

Milfoil (Myriophyllum) is an invasive waterborne plant that is spreading rampant among Sebago Cove. The plant grows rapidly and is a hinderance to both the lake’s native wildlife and to local homeowners. Milfoil both blocks the sunlight many water-dwelling plants and animals rely on, and impedes the enjoyment of activities such as swimming and fishing, driving down waterfront property values and the ability of residents to enjoy lake-based recreation.

The SCPA fights back through funding manual milfoil removal efforts and by providing educational resources in which people can inform themselves on the threat and how to prevent the spread of milfoil. Because of how rapidly the plant spreads, how easily it takes root when transported from one area of the lake to another, and the tedious and expensive process of milfoil removal, the fight is not an easy one - but it is one that can be won through awareness, education, and the generous support of our Sebago Lake community.

OUR PLAN

The plan to reduce the milfoil infestation in Sebago Cove was discussed at a meeting by numerous homeowners of all HOA’s and is supported by Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection and LEA.

  • Each waterfront homeowner is responsible for the cost of milfoil removal in front of their home, from the shoreline to the channel.

  • The SPPOA mooring group is responsible for the cost of milfoil removal in the two mooring fields.

  • The common dock areas in Lakeview, Sebago Cove Estates, and Sebago Harbor are responsible for the milfoil removal in their respective common dock areas.

As a collective community consisting of 5 HOA’s, SCPA will work to coordinate the private suctioning or tarping for everyone.

The money SCPA is raising goes to support keeping milfoil out of the channel.

  • The channel at the north end of the Cove closed in during the 2024 season andthis triggered potential discussions about closing the Cove off from Sebago Lake.

  • The channel is also narrower as milfoil spreads from both east and west shorelines. SCPA needs to make sure we suction the perimeters of the channel so it does not continue to become narrower.

SCPA fundraising is to make sure the channel remains clear throughout the Cove which benefits all of us.

We all use the channel.

This is a requirement to ensure the Cove is not closed off from the lake.

Sebago Cove

Sebago Cove is a relatively small body of water that connects to Sebago Lake.
